Children’s Book Project

From the website: “The Children’s Book Project was founded to help build literacy by providing free, new and gently used books to children who need them. Since our beginning in 1992, we have collected and distributed over 1,000,000 books to San Francisco Bay Area children and their shelters, schools, community and daycare centers.” For information on obtaining books, go to http://www.childrensbookproject.org/.

Free Books for Kids

Free Books for Kids in the Sacramento / Santa Cruz regions:
This organization collects gently used children’s literature and non-fiction books and redistributes them to underserved children living in Sacramento and Santa Cruz counties. They will also give free children’s books to teachers in these regions. To donate books. to ask for books, or to find out about events, please go to the website.

RIF (Reading is Fundamental)

A national organization that provides free books to low-income children. For information on setting up a RIF program at your school, go to:

RAFT (Resource Area for Teachers)

Provides low-cost materials and supplies to support hands-on learning activities, as well as guidance in how to use the materials. There is a small membership fee, which your school/district may already have paid for; to see if your school or district is supporting the small membership fee for teaches, go to http://www.raft.net/index.php?pg=discounts. RAFT is located one block off of Highway 880 and Brokaw Road in San Jose, at 1355 Ridder Park Drive, just a short distance from the Santa Clara County Office of Education.
Current shopping hours are:
Tues, Wed and Friday: 10:30 – 5:30pm
Thursday: 10:30 – 7:00pm
Saturday: 9:30 – 4:00pm
Closed Sunday and Monday

International Children’s Digital Library

From the website: The mission of the International Children’s Digital Library Foundation (ICDL Foundation) is to support the world’s children in becoming effective members of the global community – who exhibit tolerance and respect for diverse cultures, languages and ideas — by making the best in children’s literature available online free of charge. The Foundation pursues its vision by building a digital library of outstanding children’s books from around the world and supporting communities of children and adults in exploring and using this literature through innovative technology designed in close partnership with children for children.
