VASE Member Login Please use the information on your VASE report to sign on to the Member’s Only section of the website. There you will find vocabulary activities, lists of words for 4th and 5th grade and other useful information.
Pre-assessment:
(This pre-assessment can be scaffolded for ELLs by having students work in teacher-selected pairs or small groups to offer peer support.): After extensive study of a specific subject, students individually, in pairs or small groups, will draw and label what they have learned.

Post-assessment:
For the actual report, use the Rubric for Nonfiction Reports (Scott et al., 2008, p. 159).
Pre-Assessment
The teacher will need to do one of the pre-assessment activities to determine which words are most important to highlight. This might be using a Word Rating Guide test or a KWL chart. This KWL Chart should go under the main list of Activities.

Post-assessment:
The teacher has the option of giving students a traditional follow-up vocabulary quiz. The teacher can also create a performance-based assessment by doing one or more of the follow-up activities listed below.

The teacher can create a performance-based assessment by having students individually complete a Word Sort and explain their thinking about why they categorized the words and/or chose specific categories. They can also be required to describe the patterns between the words.
